Agnula Turns to Red Hat Linux to Develop a New Distribution

Red Hat, Inc. is directly involved in Project Agnula (A GNU Linux Audio distribution), which is subsidised by the European Community, and will use the opportunity to create a new Open Source distribution based on Red Hat Linux. With its numerous professional and multimedia audio applications, this package will be distributed free of charge under the name ReHMuDi, which stands for Red Hat Multimedia Distribution.

Entirely designed within the concept of Free Software, this version will at the same time be easy to install and update, and will also offer all the tools required for musical creation and production, compilation and distribution.

The project, scheduled to run for 24 months, is being implemented in close collaboration with acoustics and musical research centres, notably:

• IRCAM, the Institut de Recherche et de Coordination Acoustique/musique in Paris
• KTH, Kung Tekniska Högsolan in Stockholm
• Universita Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona
• Free Software Foundation Europe

Red Hat's active participation in this project lies within the framework of the Agnula Project, and has the following objectives:

• To facilitate the development of a Linux distribution dedicated to audio applications and thus to group the best tools currently available in one integral package
• To support scientific research in music and related areas
• To provide the basis for creating a common platform for use in universities and research centres
• To ensure a greater diffusion of different cultures and musical tastes, as well as to ensure the recognition of the musicians involved with this project.

"By developing a release specifically designed for professionals in the musical industry, Red Hat wants to enable authors and composers, as well as simple amateurs, to free themselves from technological and cultural constraints," declares Franz Meyer, Director for Southern Europe at Red Hat, before adding "By giving more freedom to artists, our aim is to expand the global nature of music even further and to extend the concept of Open Source Software to Open Source Music."

This distribution will be available as a download and on CD-ROM. The first Beta version will be released on the Internet by the end of 2002 at http://www.agnula.org.
