Xandros announced today the release date for its first-generation Linux desktop product, Xandros Desktop 1.0.

The product, due to be released on September 30, 2002 and available for purchase within three weeks of that date, is built upon Linux kernel 2.4.19, XFree86 4.2, Debian 3.0, Corel LINUX 3.0, and enhanced KDE. Xandros Desktop 1.0 features the Xandros Install Express, Xandros File Manager, and extensive configuration panels and wizards that will create a desktop environment that is attractive to both Linux and Windows users. Xandros Desktop 1.0 also includes Xandros Networks - an application that enables users to obtain feature enhancements, bug fixes, and the latest Xandros news via a single mouse click. Xandros Desktop 1.0 also provides plug and play support for USB devices.

"Xandros Desktop 1.0 will be the first Linux desktop that is truly user friendly, provides compatibility with multiple types of hardware and delivers the security and stability that Linux is known for", said Mike Bego, Vice President, Xandros. "We are confident that this product will appeal to a wide audience of computer users."

In preparation for product launch, Xandros will release its final Beta on August 30, 2002. Feedback from its first two Beta releases has been invaluable to the development of Xandros Desktop 1.0. The product development team has communicated directly with Beta users to ensure system compatibility, usability and feature functionality. "The Linux community has played a key role in the development of Xandros Desktop 1.0, and we look forward to contributing back to this community in the future" said Ming Poon, Vice President Product Development, Xandros. "We selected the best open source technologies and customized them to create a solution that is simple, stable, and secure."

Xandros plans to release a server product in 2003 to facilitate the deployment and management of large desktop installations for corporations.
