"The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has joined the growing number
of Federal Government departments to embrace Linux, moving its Web
servers over to a Linux cluster and exploring a roll out of the
open source OS to a portion of its 50 Unix servers.
"BoM assistant director of computing Peter Gigliotti said the
department is replacing its existing Web servers with a cluster of
four to eight PCs running Linux because Unix does not provide the
scalability the Bureau's Web site demands. The Bureau has been
toying with the idea of rolling out a Linux cluster for a number of

on them. We're planning to have four to eight [PCs in the cluster]
at the moment but that could increase,' said Gigliotti. 'We have
been using Unix but Linux scales better...'"
