"First of all, it's a given that industry leaders like Sun and IBM are going to provide a big part of the solution. They're never going to provide all of the solution, although they want you to believe that. More than that, operating systems, databases, web servers, app servers, etc. are going to be so commoditized--and so important--that for the leaders of every one of those industries the real problem is open source.

"That's the real issue: how do we compete with free? And what happens beyond that? How do you develop the new applications, the new access, the new capability? I would challenge technology leaders to think about how to turn what is basically a supplier-driven model today--essentially a bunch of hammers looking for a nail--to what I call organic computing. (Or real-time computing if you want to call it that...)"
