"Sven Luther began a discussion on the lkml regarding non-free firmware that's contained in various Linux kernel modules. He begins, 'current linux kernel source hold undistributable non-free firmware blobs, and to consider them as mere agregation, a clear licence statement from the copyright holders of said non-free firmware blob is needed.' He went on to list some of the specific drivers in question saying, 'tg3, qla2xxx, acenix and a couple of others are example of such modules.' He goes on to explain that the specific problem is that as the firmware blobs are included with GPL files and there's nothing distinguishing them as being under a different license, thus they are assumed to be released under the GPL and need to include source code..."
