"The European Parliament voted Wednesday to reject a proposal to let software receive patent protection across the European Union.

"The vote by the Parliament, 648 to 14, was a rejection of the European Commission's position as well as a rejection of the approach to patents used by the United States, which permits a wide interpretation of what can be protected. Patents let their owners charge license fees for the use of innovations..."
