"A short thread on the lkml compared using netlink for transferring information between kernel and user-space processes, versus using debugfs. Tim Bird noted that he'd heard of several projects being asked to switch from debugfs/procfs to netlink, and asked for a quick explanation as to why. Evgeniy Polyakov pointed out a major advantage, 'netlink is always [present] in the kernel, so [there is] no need to make additional dependencies for [a] special FS...'"
