"As background, Fedora is a popular Linux distribution maintained by the open source community, with some sponsorship from Red Hat. Red Hat uses Fedora as the basis for its commercial Linux products, so technology destined for Red Hat often appears first in Fedora.

"Fedora is one of the very largest Linux distros. It claimed as recently as two years ago to be number one, although today, that title probably belongs to Ubuntu.

"Compared to other major distros, such as Ubuntu, Fedora is arguably more "free." It is stricter about cleaving to purely open source licensing. Thanks to innovative technologies like kickstart, and additional metadata fields available in the RPM package format, "every Fedora user is a potential remixer, or distributor," as Paul Frields, distro chief, puts it. Fedora contains more than 15,000 packages, maintained by about 1,000 individual volunteers. "
