"The Illumos Project is an ambitious one; its goal is
to release a completely open source operating system based on
Oracle's Solaris OS. The Illumos community got a huge jolt recently
when a leaked memo revealed Oracle's plans to effectively kill the
OpenSolaris Project, the formerly leading open source Solaris. In
many ways, the death of OpenSolaris may invigorate Illumos. One of
the key promises of the Illumos Project is that it will be truly
independent: no disgruntled upstream vendor will ever be able to
kill it. This is a noble project that may one day stand alongside
Linux as a free and open alternative to locked-down systems. In
this article, I will shed some light on Illumos.
"Though the Illumos Project is a community-driven project
directed by an independent team, it does have a lot of corporate
cheerleaders. One of these is Nexanta Systems, Inc."
