“Whenever you’re on the Internet, you face the risk of hackers
and crackers taking over your system, deleting your files or
hijacking your computer accounts for use in taking over other
machines.”

How can you protect yourself? Instead of running for the
hills with your shotgun and leftover Y2K rations, you can use a
feature of your Linux kernel that will keep others from connecting
to the most vulnerable network ports of your machine.
Doing so
will help compensate for the fact that Linux network code isn’t
always completely secure….”

“IP Chains (ipchains) is a traffic filtering package that comes
with the 2.1.102 Linux kernel (and above) that can block Internet
hackers from cracking into your computer when you’re online. It’s
usually precompiled in your distribution’s initially installed
kernel, but you should double-check to see that it has been
activated on your system.”
