“Despite a spate of recent criticism of Sun Microsystems Inc.’s
ownership of Java, IBM Corp. Wednesday reinforced its support of
the technology by saying it will offer nine Java virtual machines
(JVMs) to support the Java 2 Standard Edition 1.3 platform by the
end of the year. “

“IBM… said it will offer JVMs for Windows, Linux, AIX and
OS/390 operating systems in June.
JVMs for OS/400 and OS/2
will follow this summer. In addition, IBM said it will offer three
JVMs for Intel Corp.’s Itanium processor for Windows 2000,
Linux and AIX/Monterey
, a code name for the future delivery of
AIX on the Intel IA-64 processor-based systems. These JVMs will be
available later in the year simultaneously with the launch of
Itanium.”

“IBM already has released preview JVMs for AIX, OS/390 and
Linux.
These previews can be downloaded this week from
www.alphaWorks.ibm.com, IBM’s early technology access Web
site.”
