Enterprise Linux Today: CollabNet Helps Investment Banking Software Go Open Source

“CollabNet is focusing on enabling an open source
development model, for a fee, for companies that want to move a
body of code into an open source development model. CollabNet’s
facilitation of the open source release of a major piece of
software by a German investment bank is just the latest development
in what may turn out to be a trend.”

“If you’ve been scanning the headlines on Linux Today over the
past year or so, you probably recognize the CollabNet name — which
you may remember as Collab.net, its original name, that is still
retained in the website URL — and you probably think of it as an
open source project facilitator, “much like SourceForge.net”…
Well, you wouldn’t exactly be wrong in thinking of CollabNet that
way, but you would be missing an important aspect of the way in
which CollabNet does it.”

“The latest example of what may turn out to be a major trend is
the announcement by German investment bank, Dresdner Kleinwort
Wasserstein (DrKW), that it is releasing — under the name
“openadaptor” — the source code for what DrKW terms “one of the
most fundamental pieces of infrastructure for all e-business that
enables the seamless integration of disparate systems.” DrKW sees
the release of the source code as “a fundamental step to speeding
up e-business connectivity for clients of the investment bank.”
