Globe and Mail: Microsoft’s Real Worry: Linux

“As a U.S. court considers a proposal to break the software
goliath apart and as Microsoft prepares to bog down the process
with judicial appeals, the Redmond, Wash.-based company may find
itself too distracted to deal with a more immediate threat to its
Windows-based business: the Linux operating system.”

“As more companies turn to ASPs to supply and manage their
software, there is expected to be growing demand for Linux-based
servers and a decline in the percentage of servers running Windows
NT. “Linux is going to be increasingly part of the picture,” says
Christopher Rouse, vice-president of marketing at Infocast Corp., a
Toronto-based ASP.”

“The evidence is mounting. Michael Dell, founder and top boss at
Dell Computer Corp. of Round Rock, Tex., said in a recent visit to
Toronto that one in four servers sold in the world today are bought
from Dell, and that one third of those servers being used for
Internet applications are powered by Linux.”
