“President Bush will likely return Charles A. James to his
former position as the Justice Department’s antitrust chief,
according to press reports Tuesday.”
“James last served in the role of acting assistant attorney
general for antitrust in 1992, the last year of the first Bush
administration. He currently serves as chair of the antitrust and
trade regulation practice for the law firm of Jones, Day, Reavis
and Pogue.”
“It is not immediately clear how James’ appointment will
affect the division’s most prominent antitrust case, U.S. vs.
Microsoft. The Wall Street Journal reports that last year
James said that consumers have benefited by there being a common
software platform and that a breakup of Microsoft would cause a
“divergence” of that common platform.”
