IT-Director: Linux, Coming Soon to a Mainframe Near You

enquired about DMA buffers and address space. The rumour was
confirmed in December when IBM published its modifications and
additions to the Linux 2.2.13 code base for the support of the
S/390 architecture….”

According to IBM, Linux on S/390 will the fastest Linux
that exists and will also naturally inherit many of the
enterprise-level characteristics of the mainframe.
Given IBM’s
unambiguous enthusiasm for Linux, we expect further developments of
Linux 390….”
