“Loki’s port of Soldier Of Fortune, by Raven Software is an
old-school FPS. The game is pure shoot ’em up, send ’em home fun.
It’s plot is merely a flimsy device to thread you from stage to
stage, where you get to kill alarming numbers of people. And when I
say kill, I mean Kill, with a capital ‘K’….”
“Level design was interesting, with stages varying from sewers
and moving trains, to slaughterhouses and underground labs. There
were very few times when a level became boring or repetitive. One
nag I do have is that the game is quite dark, and the ladders are
not 3D models, rather they are 2D pixmaps. This became an
irritation when you needed to scale a ladder, but couldn’t find it
unless you stood directly in front of it.”
“The sound in SOF was a mixed bag. On the one hand, the quality
of the in game sound was quite good, clear and decent voice-acting,
as well as terrific munitions and other sounds effects. On the
other hand, the sound kept croaking on me. I had this odd problem
with the sound not working on start-up, and no sound in a game like
this is just plain lame. The remedy was easy enough to warrant this
an annoyance and not a full-on problem, I just had to go in the
sound menu and play with the settings until the sound kicked
in.”
