“Somehow, Phil was stuck in single user mode….“
“His Linux system was running fine, until the power failure. By
day, Phil is a customer service representative for a software
company. His system was using an uninterruptible power supply, but
it wasn’t a smart UPS that can automatically shut a system down
when the power cuts out. Phil and his co-workers had long since
gone home for the day. Nobody was around to hear the UPS
scream.”
“The next morning, Phil’s machine was stuck at a root shell,
which looked quite like single user mode. Thinking it was just a
fluke, he rebooted again. He watched this time as the startup
scripts executed, producing the green OK messages. But another root
shell came up. No other virtual consoles were available.”
