“This is the begining of a series of articles in which I will
focus on the new and exciting technologies that will be included in
the different GNOME releases this year. While most of you know such
high profile application development projects such as Evolution and
Nautilus, there are a lot of underlaying new technologies being
developed too. The high quality of the basic technologies put into
GNOME has long been well regarded, especially seeing that the
fierce competition in this area easily could have tempted the GNOME
developers to choose quick and dirty solutions in order to inflate
the development rate. The quality of these technologies are the
primary reason for GNOME generally being acknowledged as the most
advanced desktop development environment for available for Linux
and the one which holds the most promise for the future.”

“While these technologies include old stars like ORBit,
GNOME-Canvas, libXML and Libglade, I will in this series mostly
focus on technologies just now maturing, like the iRDA utilities
being developed as part of the Linux iRDA project or the
international language support being refined through the Pango
Project. To start of this series I am taking a closer look at the
GNOME Palm Pilot Support….”

Unlike J-Pilot the GNOME Pilot Project doesn’t try to
create a full suite of Linux applications for use with your Palm,
instead it aims to create conduits for use by GNOME applications
for which Palm integrations could be of interest.
