LinuxPR: Omnis Software Outlines A Low-Risk Approach To Linux For Businesses

Omnis Software used the recent Linux@work roadshow to
discuss the real benefits of Linux for businesses, and how best to
evaluate and approach the technology to ensure the minimum possible
risk. Unlike much of the activity surrounding Linux recently, Omnis
took a very pragmatic approach to the problems of migrating from
one server operating system to another.

“The presentation focussed on where the costs and risks are to
be found, and how best to address and minimise them. In particular,
it broke down costs into hardware, operating system and, most
importantly, software development costs. Omnis Software suggested a
strategy based on planning the switch when updating or changing
mission critical systems.”

“Mark Aspinall, European Marketing Manager said “Software
development can cost hundreds of thousands and even millions of
dollars. To invest such large sums when the switch between
platforms is not definite, would be very high risk. It would be
more fiscally responsible to firstly do the development as part of
the mission system software cycle, and secondly to use tools which
would allow the final development to be deployed on a number of
different operating systems.”
