“Many questions remain about how effective the proposed remedies
to Microsoft’s monopoly and illegal business practices will be. Joe
Barr pores over the legal documents with a penguin’s eye and tells
us whether the proposals have teeth.”

“On Friday, April 28, the US Department of Justice (DOJ), 17
states, and the District of Columbia made known their Proposed
Final Judgement in the Microsoft antitrust case. The much
anticipated “cure” surprised many by proposing to divide Microsoft
into two companies, one that deals in the Windows OS, and another
that deals in other software. The cure also included toothy conduct
remedies to modify Microsoft’s predatory business practices.”

Splitting the firm in two might have a dramatic impact on
the Linux market, although there is some debate about whether it
would be a positive one. The conduct remedies, on the other hand,
cannot help but further popularize open source software in general
and Linux in particular.
