“AvantGo Enterprise Interactive (formerly Avant-Go Enterprise
3.1) races to the rescue with tools to centralize palmtop data
synchronization and application backup–freeing IT staff from the
cumbersome ‘one palmtop/one PC’ model. The primary components of
AvantGo include the central server (AvantGo Server) and a client
component residing on each handheld (AvantGo Client). Clients and
the server communicate over the network via the Mobile Application
Link, an open-source protocol that must be installed on client PCs
where docking occurs. AvantGo Server runs on 233-MHz Pentium II/
SPARC Ultra or better machines with 128 MB of RAM and 100 MB of
disk space, under Linux kernel 2.0 or higher, Sun Microsystems
Solaris 2.51, 2.6 or 7, or Windows NT 4.0 (Service Pack 4 or
higher).”

“The specific implementation of the Mobile Application Link
protocol layer
, Mobile Link, used on each desktop to connect
the clients to the server, is available for Windows 95/98/NT
4.0 only.
This is bad news for users of Linux, MacOS and
others. But since Mobile Link is an implementation of an Open
Source product, other platform support may become
available.”
