Project Status

0.6.1 Release Today:

For those of you who were just getting used to 0.6.0, get ready,
‘cuz here we go again!

Predominantly enhancements to 0.6.0 (with a heapin’ helpin o’
bug fixes), 0.6.1 addresses some of the critical pieces that got
left out of 0.6.0 due to time constraints. Of the more important
features and/or fixes, you’ll probably be most interested in the
following:

* Fixes to the install.pl script (we warned you to test
it…)

* Documentation (Quick Start Guide is up-2-date).

* Random “shout-outs” to 1337 h4x0r5

* Category support added to Web UI

* More TCP poller configurations added, including OpenSSH,
Postgres, and Oracle

Our thanks to those of you that found and submitted bugs against
the 0.6.0 release. It’s because of you that we were able to deliver
0.6.1 this soon after 0.6.0. We’ve also got several efforts
underway that will play into the next sub-release, of which you’ll
probably most appreciate: A Simplified Install Process! More on
that later.

Known Issues:

We’ve fixed a lot of the smaller problems (and some big ones).
However, there are still a lot of problems that we haven’t fixed.
Most of these are problems that are annoyances, but others are
things that need to be fixed. Moving forward, there will be a file
called “KNOWN_ISSUES” in the root OpenNMS directory (or in the
“opennms-all” directory, for those of you checking out from CVS),
and it will start off with the following tidbits, for those of you
too anxious to wait for the movie:

* Categories deleted from the View Rule Builder are deleted from
the GUI, but not from the XML.

* ICMP access to a device is required for discovery, although we
can poll devices that don’t support it.

* The Distributed Poller Configuration panel has a bug
associated with package renaming. It doesn’t.

* Notification only supports one outgoing page at a time. NOTE:
Easy fix that we just haven’t gotten around to.

* Documentation way out of date.

* Installation way too cumbersome.

* Multiple things intentionally disabled in the Admin GUI due to
a bad case of the “no workies”.

* Every interface that does not support SNMP is added to the
database on a “one interface=one node” basis.

Many kudos to Jeff for feeling the pains and driving us to
maintain this list.

Coding Projects Underway:

* Solaris Port Postgres Procedures — Underway. No update.

* Postgres for NT — Looking for someone to test.

* SNMP Poller/Data Collection — The data collection work is
done, still working on the interface to generate the reports.

* Event DTD — Checked in to branch.

* Tuning — We’re all about getting this into a smaller
footprint.

* User Interfaces — Full functionality included in 0.6.1

* SCM UI — Replaced with “./opennms.sh scm status”

* TCP Poller — Added 3 more, including OpenSSH, Oracle, and
Postgres.

* Maji Prelim Work — Rick is building Perl code that is
successfully parsing MIB files. Check him out, in all his glory, on
the “events” list.

* Notification Configuration — Works in the U/G/V config panel,
but not the Wizard. We’re disabling the Wizard until the
functionality is there.

* Swing Interface — Fighting random oddities. Proceed with
utmost caution.

Upcoming Road Shows

Interested in having an OpenNMS speaker for your group? Of
course you are. Email Luke at luke@opennms.org

* May 5th – Twin Cities LUG, Minneapolis, MN

* June 2nd – Northern Virginia LUG (NOVALUG), Alexandria, VA

* July 23-27 – O’Reilly Open Source Convention, San Diego,
CA

For additional details on these appearances and others, check
out the web site at http://www.opennms.org/sections/opennms/events

Early Adopter Program Status

Kudos and thanks to Jeff, who kicked off the Early Adopter
Program last week with his first install. He returned to the
office, a little worse for the wear, but with a healthy “bitch
list” of things that didn’t work right, didn’t work like he
expected, didn’t work like he wanted, or just didn’t work.

The good news is that EAP Member Company #1 is up and running.
The bad news is that now they are officially behind a version. Good
thing Jeff has plenty of time on his hands…

Enrollment in the EAP is filling up quickly. If you or your
company is interested in participating, check out Ben’s spiffy new
web page for it at http://www.opennms.org/sections/get_involved/eap/

The Wish List

If I only had a brain…

* In the 0.6.x release (and CVS), checkout the TODO file

* More Data Collection configs wanted for the
DataCollection.xml

* Any interest in more TCP pollers? Let us know (or better yet,
build one yourself…)

* Testing on new, exciting platforms is always appreciated.
Somebody want to mess with the Cygwin port of our Postgres stored
procedures and see where we stand?

* Any additional help we can get proving our documentation
either right or wrong is appreciated. Thanks.

* Got any creative applications for OpenNMS that we haven’t
considered? Let us know!

* Anybody up for a security analysis of OpenNMS? We know we’ve
got a lot of holes, but we’d rather have most of them identified
before we start trying to plug them. Any security folks that are
playing along, feel free to chime in here. Anytime, now. Go on.
Anytime…

* Anyone out there have familiarity with portmapper on NT? The
new SCM will need it and, well, er, um, I don’t know nothin’ but
mappin’ no ports!

Afterthoughts

I thought things were supposed to calm down immediately post
major release. It never has before, but I always think it is going
to. It doesn’t. Things have been far more hectic since the release
than beforehand, and I’d bitch, but we’re making a lot of good
progress.

The in-house MP3 library is pushing its internal bounds (30GB)
and we’ve got another drive ready to go, but we have neither the
time to take it down, nor the guts to potentially interfere with
Jeff listening to Dokken all afternoon.

Ben noticed today that there is no Meatloaf in the archive. He
made that statement thinking that this exclusion was
unintentional.

Like a Bat out of Hell,

Shane O.
