“VMware, Inc., developer of software that enables a single
computer to run multiple operating systems simultaneously, today
announced that Network Associates (Nasdaq: NETA), the world’s
largest independent network security and management software
company, has chosen to implement VMware software in its Quality
Assurance (QA) department. Now, Network Associates’ QA engineers
have the ability to run tests on application software in different
platform environments on the same computer, drastically reducing
the number of computers needed for comprehensive testing.”

“In the recent past, testing application software by running it
simultaneously on several operating systems generally required a
separate computer for each operating system. The only alternative
to this was to implement a “dual boot” machine that had to be
rebooted every time a different operating system was needed — a
tedious and time-consuming process. For the frustrated QA survivors
of the “dual boot” test machine, VMware is a dream come true.”

VMware runs on top of either a Windows NT, Windows 2000, or
Linux host platform, and supports Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows
98, Windows NT, Windows 2000, MS DOS, all major variants of Linux,
FreeBSD, Novell Netware Server, and Solaris 7 Intel Edition as
guest operating systems.
Once installed, VMware software
easily loads multiple operating systems onto the host machine,
leaving the installed OS intact and unaffected by individual
virtual machine testing environments. This means that a crash in
one virtual machine will not impair either the host computer or the
other virtual machines running on the computer.”
