on the growing movement among software developers to share their
code.

have all that I need. How does sharing software code, or the
so-called ‘Open Source’ movement, benefit me?

“RAYHILL: I no longer think of my personal computer as the
centerpiece of my productivity. The Internet has now become the
operating system. As such, my personal computer is merely a device
which allows me to access the vast information, services and
software that exist within this huge mass of interlinked computers.
Open Source software has been, and will continue to be, a
fundamental component in the Internet infrastructure that you and I
access every day. In that sense, it is essential to each of us. As
far as operating my personal desktop/laptop computer, there are
more ‘Open Source’ options available to me today than ever before.
And they are beginning to rival or exceed other, commercially
available products…”
