“There are a total of 21,652 packages installed on my home
workstation, an AMD64 single core processor box which has been in
use since March 2006. It runs the testing stream of Debian. That’s
a lot of code, all of it free as in beer.

“This mass of code enables me to carry out a range of
functions–and in most cases, I have two or three packages which I
can use for the same task. Some of the packages perform simple
tasks–as in the case of the text editor which I’m using to to
write this article…”
