The emergence of the Linux operating system, with its
penguin motif, has brought the idea of a non-Windows desk-top
tantalisingly close, for both home and office use.

“Linux is bucking the trend in operating system development.
With Windows the latest software almost always takes advantage of
rapid development in hardware; Linux was in essence developed in
academia by a mostly student body whose home computers had outdated
processors, little memory and scant disc capacity. Much effort
therefore went on making the code as efficient as possible.”

“This has paid off handsomely: it is possible to run a full
X-Windows workstation on an old Intel 486 processor with 32Mbytes
of memory. Couple this with the stability of the Linux kernel – the
current record is more than 365 days without a reboot – and the
server market becomes wide open to Linux ingress.”
