“Our mission, our evangelism to the open source community,
is that money is good,” Thompson says. “The fact that open source
can move forward without money being involved is great, but money
can make it better….“
“Open source is based on the notion that software developers
have a problem and they fix it,” Thompson says. “If you’re not a
software developer, you have no way of getting your software fixed.
Cosource is built on the notion that I’m not a software developer,
but I have this problem, and this is how much I’d be willing to
pay….”
“Aside from financing, Thompson says his main goal is to
evangelize and build critical mass within the open source
community. It’s an uphill climb, he admits. Although open source
and free software proponents have no problem with people making
money off their own labor, successful development projects such as
Linux have highly evolved social structures that might get tainted
by the sudden infusion of filthy lucre.”
