"Unix is back. Less than five years ago, industry pundits sounded a death knell for the Unix platform and predicted the rise of Windows NT as the server operating system of choice. But now, Unix is regaining marketshare as corporate users turn to the platform to leverage the affordability, manageability, stability and scalability for their e-commerce applications."

"The explosion of the Web is certainly boosting Unix server sales," says Ross Maurie, vice president of Unix software at IBM Corp., Somers, N.Y. "With business-to-business sites going up on the Web and the explosion of consumers going on the Internet, a lot of Web serving/transactional commerce servers are Unix. Our Unix sales are continuing to grow."

"Unix vendors are starting to make their operating systems more graphical, user-friendly and manageable," says Ingo Roemer, president of Rocket Science Internet Solutions, a 5-year-old Sun Solaris solution provider in Portsmouth, N.H. Hewlett-Packard Co. and Sun Microsystems Inc., for example, have each bolstered their offerings."
