"TurboLinux last week released a new version of its Linux software aimed at developers working with Intel's 64bit IA-64 processor."

"TurboLinux's Richard Clooke told IT Week that TurboLinux Workstation Pro 6.1 includes all the development tools and libraries necessary to produce code optimised for Intel's 64bit processors, which are due to appear in volume from early next year under the codename Itanium."

"Although source code can be written on any system, programmers need access to an Itanium system in order to use the compiler and also to test their finished programs."

"TurboLinux 6.1 is supplied with the beta version of the new IA-64 kernel, version 2.2.16-3. This is a pre-release version of the long-awaited 2.4 kernel that allows IA-64 systems to run optimally with Linux. The 2.4 kernel has yet to be finished and, according to Linux creator Linus Torvalds, is expected to complete beta tests in December."
