IBM recently released Linux S/390 client drivers for their Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) network-based backup system. Tivoli Storage Manager, formerly known as ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager, is a client/server tool that allows a centralized mass storage server to provide backup and recovery services to multiple client machines. An S/390 mainframe can support network-based backups and archives for hundreds of PCs running Linux, Windows, or OS/2, and for workstations running AIX or several other UNIX variants.
TSM is a sophisticated backup manager that uses a back-end relational database on the server to automatically merge new incremental backups into an existing full backup, so that files which have not changed are never resent across the network. Data can be restored either from the most current backup or from previous versions. The client portion of the system has both command line and graphical interfaces, and there is a web-based interface that uses Java. The clients can be set up to allow server polling, so that end users do not have to remember to run daily or weekly backups.
