"IBM today announced that oil exploration firm
WesternGeco will deploy a seismic imaging system comprised of a
cluster of 256 IBM eServer* xSeries systems, all running Linux.
Seismic imaging allows scientists to create detailed 3D maps of
hidden oil and gas reservoirs before drilling starts.
This is IBM's second foray into working with oil companies using
Linux-based supercomputers. An installation at Shell, comprised of
1024 xSeries servers, is the largest Linux supercomputer in the
world, according to IBM."
