Enterprise Linux Today: IBM Builds Linux Supercomputer for Oil Exploration Firm

"IBM today announced that oil exploration firm WesternGeco will deploy a seismic imaging system comprised of a cluster of 256 IBM eServer* xSeries systems, all running Linux.

Seismic imaging allows scientists to create detailed 3D maps of hidden oil and gas reservoirs before drilling starts.

This is IBM's second foray into working with oil companies using Linux-based supercomputers. An installation at Shell, comprised of 1024 xSeries servers, is the largest Linux supercomputer in the world, according to IBM."
