May 30, 2001, 22:11 (0 Talkback[s])
"In a move that shows strong support for open source software in Japan and Asia, the Open Source Development Lab (OSDL) has announced the establishment of a second facility outside Tokyo, Japan. The new lab, in addition to a facility near Portland, Oregon, will increase OSDL's ability to enable projects that expand the enterprise and carrier-class functionality of Linux and Linux-based software.

Supported by NEC, Hitachi, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi Electric, Miracle Linux and another 14 global companies, the Open Source Development Lab (OSDL) is a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing the reliability and scalability of the Linux system. OSDL enables the development of Linux-based business systems, communications infrastructure and other mission-critical systems.

"Programmers and businesses in Asia have adopted Linux and open source programming with record speed." said Koichi Ikumi, executive general manager, Computer Software Operations Unit at NEC and OSDL board member. "Establishing an OSDL facility in Japan was a natural step and will increase the lab's ability to support projects of local importance, enabling Japanese and Asian developers and acting as a catalyst for the evolution of Linux worldwide."
