"Quantum Corp. has chosen Linux for its new mid-tier NAS [network-attached storage] product family, thumbing its nose at competitors that have adopted Microsoft Corp.'s operating system software.

"Quantum is breaking out of its traditional departmental-level NAS market with the launch of the Guardian 14000, priced starting at $25,000. The Guardian 14000, which provides up to 1.4 TB of storage in a 3U-high box, will have limited availability next month and ship in quantity later this summer...

"Does Quantum really have a shot in pitting its 40-odd Linux programmers against the legions of Windows coders Microsoft has at its disposal? No one can say how this storyline will play out in the long run, but for a time at least, Quantum definitely has a chance to hold its own against Windows-based NAS..."
