Sm@rt Reseller: Hell Freezes Over: Microsoft Delivers Unix Tools

Nov 13, 1998, 01:56 (3 Talkback[s])

"Microsoft Corp.'s just released Windows NT Services for Unix (SFU) Add-on Pack gives resellers Microsoft tools for Unix-NT resource sharing, password synchronization, remote access, and scripting."

"NFS services for NT, long a mainstay of such companies as Hummingbird Communications Ltd., are included in SFU."

"Microsoft is making the daemon's source code available to others Unix publishers but for now SCO, Linux, and the like are left out."

"SFU opens some licensing issues. Unix computers must have an NT Client Access License (CAL) to access files on an NT server."

"But on the plus side, Microsoft has lowered the cost threshold for cross-platform tools. The basic $149 retail price of the product is half that of any one piece (Telnet, NFS sharing, Korn shell)."

Complete story.
