Debian Elects A New Leader

The Debian project has elected a new leader. Wichert Akkerman won the election over three other candidates: Richard Braakman, Joseph Carter, and Ben Collins. Wichert replaces Ian Jackson as the Debian Project Leader, and will begin serving his term today and be leading Debian until 0000 February 4th 2000.

Debian would like to thank Ian Jackson for all of the work that he has done for the Debian project, both as leader and as a developer. Ian will continue to be affiliated with Debian as a developer and package maintainer.

The Debian project is an organization of many users who volunteer their time and effort. Its tasks include maintaining and updating Debian GNU/Linux which is a free distribution of the GNU/Linux operating system, and the development of the Debian GNU/Hurd operating system.
