"Tokyo - The Linux operating system made headway on both domestic and international fronts last week, as Dell Computer Corp. and IBM Japan Ltd. said they will install Red Hat Software Inc.'s version of the operating system in new systems.

IBM Japan said it will install Linux in its Pentium III Xeon-based Netfinity 3000 and 5000 servers, and has plans to install the open source code OS into its ThinkPad and IntelliStation systems. In addition, the company has worked with Intel K.K. to set up a Linux customer support center here.

Intel will take responsibility for ensuring that Linux runs best on its hardware. That includes tuning the Linux operating system, middleware and applications to its SIMD Katmai instruction set, as well as its eight-way symmetric multiprocessing chip set, IBM and Intel officials said.
