The Red Hat Package Manager has reached version 3.0.

As posted to the rpm-list:

The final (first?:-) release of rpm 3.0 is now available at*

The release numbers (4.2, 5.2, 6.0) indicate the version of Red Hat
Linux for which the package has been built.

This version is also available through anonymous cvs:
cvs -d login
(no password, just carriage return)
cvs -d get rpm
cd rpm

This version is identical to that which will be on Red Hat 6.0.

If you do install rpm-3.0 on a system that uses/used rpm-2.5.x, you
will have to do
rpm --rebuilddb
because the database format has changed. You will also have to do
rpm --rebuilddb if/when you go back to rpm-2.5.x.

Here are 2 FAQ for experienced users of rpm:

1) --rcfile works differently.

Old way: rpm --rcfile whatever
New way: rpm --rcfile /usr/lib/rpm/rpmrc:whatever

2) topdir (and other rpmrc configurables) work differently.

Old way:
~/.rpmrc contains
topdir: whatever

New way:
/usr/lib/rpm/rpmrc contains
macrofiles: /usr/lib/rpm/macros: ... :~/.rpmmacros
~/.rpmmacros contains
%_topdir whatever
