"Apple enjoys a unique position among major computer manufacturers as the only one to use the PowerPC chips on its motherboard. But all that's about to change.

"A recent decision by IBM to distribute a free motherboard design could force Apple to compete with other hardware vendors to sell PowerPC computers running a distribution of the Linux OS.

"IBM engineers attending this week's LinuxWorld Conference & Expo in San Jose, Calif., said manufacturers are now welcome to use its motherboard design to build their own PowerPC-based hardware."
