ComputerWorld: Microsoft ups processor count in Win 2K

"Microsoft... said the three server versions of Windows 2000 will be able to use more processors out of the box, with the entry-level server edition handling four, the advanced version eight and the data center version 32. Previously Microsoft said the symmetrical multiprocessing capabilities would only be possible with the help of a third party. In the literature for its corporate preview program of Beta 3, for example, Microsoft was only willing to tout a four-processor capability for the advanced edition."

"Until now, Microsoft has been downplaying scalability in Windows 2000. Lead product manager Craig Beilinson said today that scalability was one of the concerns users have ranked lowest in the company's market research. Reliability, he said, has been the overwhelming priority of customers. "
