" 'Compaq has decided to end development for 32-bit Windows NT on Alpha in late 1999,' Steve Millmore, a Compaq spokesman, said this morning. This does not mean the commitment to Microsoft and 64-bit Windows NT on Alpha is changing ... Alpha in fact is the development platform for 64-bit NT.' "

" 'Few Alpha installations are running NT... most are running Open VMS or Tru64 Unix,' agreed Dan Kusnetzky, an analyst at International Data Corp. in Framingham, Mass. According to Kusnetzky, almost 94% of all NT server shipments run on Intel Corp. platforms.

Compaq, as a result, may choose to emphasize Linux as the mass-volume operating system on Alpha..."

"Less than 5% of Alpha Processor's sales comes from the Windows NT market... 'As a result, the short-term play for us is Linux,' Bradshaw said."
