"Despite proclamations to the contrary, Microsoft is running
scared of Linux in at least some areas of its operation. This is
particularly the case in the embedded market where Linux has now
emerged as a threat to Windows CE, along with other established
threats such as PalmOS, NCOS, Java and EPOC. Windows CE has not yet
gained significant market share in any of its target markets except
the set top box where Microsoft virtually bought it some business
"It could well do without competition from Linux, but it 's got
it anyway. So there are groups within Microsoft that have been
advocating for the past few months that Windows CE 3.0 should go
open source. There has undoubtedly been some heated internal
debate on the matter."
