"Before Novell decided to embrace open source, it took pains
to make sure leaders of the open source community were intimately
involved. Kris Magnusson, Novell's open source champion, made the
rounds with open source heavyweights all the way up to Linus
Torvalds himself, who advised that the company craft a process for
supporting the open source community."
"The company also sought advice from outfits such as Mozilla and
IBM, who had already put drafted open source licenses of their own.
"They told us what failed and what succeeded," said Dave Shirk,
vice president for product marketing at Novell."
