"PC WEEK: You've been all over the place regarding Linux -- it's a threat, it's not a threat, it's making inroads, it's not. What is it?

"BALLMER: It's a competitor.

"PC WEEK: Where?

"BALLMER: It varies. It has some good acceptance in the ISP community. It has some reasonable acceptance in certain computer science departments in the university world, and among some hobbyists and enthusiasts. Has it sold absolutely totally like hotcakes? No, but it's a real competitor.

"PC WEEK: Are you any closer to porting applications to Linux than you were six months ago?

"BALLMER: No. I don't think there's much of a market for those applications yet."
