"Authenticated ftp: You must supply a valid username and password to get access to a file area. You can download and probably upload files (get and send)."

"Anonymous ftp: Anyone can log in using just the username anonymous and their e-mail address as a password. They can download from the /pub directory and upload files to certain directories on the server."
