"The book is NOT an introduction to C programming. You must
know C in order to understand the book. This book is also
quite a bit thinner than Beginning Linux Programming. It ONLY
covers C programming under Linux. No discussion of Shell
programming or X programming is presented in this book. If you are
not interested in X programming, shell programming, perl, or web
programming then this book may fill your needs."
"One interesting topic that is not covered in Beginning Linux
Programming but is in this book is Sound Programming. I found it
interesting. Few books cover the topic of Sound Programming other
than Linux Multimedia Guide from O'Reilly. Sound programming is
only briefly covered, but it is enough to actually program your
Linux box to play sounds from the soundcard, not the speaker!"
"Another topic not covered in Beginning Linux Programming but is
in this book is the subject of programming Daemons. A daemon is a
background process that runs without a controlling tty and is
non-interactive. They generally provide some sort of service. A web
server and ftp server generally runs as a daemon, in the background
waiting for something to connect and ask it for service."
