"Upside... talks to Klaus Schleicher, director of product management, Lernout & Hauspie.

UpsideToday: First question: Why Linux?

Klaus Schleicher: We went to Linux because all these new processors for the mobile market, specifically the StrongArm II processor, are designed for low power consumption. Linux seems to be the operating system optimally designed for these processors. Linux also has already been proven to work well with StrongArm. That was our primary choice for the processor. It's new. It gets a lot of processing power. And it consumes less power than the typical Pentium processors. Linux simply came with it. Linux is the OS most chosen by handheld devices for the industry.

UT: Really? I was aware of increasing Linux activity in the PDA realm but was unaware of any commercial products.

KS: You're probably not seeing them yet. The future devices which are going to come into the market are going to be based on [Linux]."
