"IBM's strength in e-business is its ability to offer a spectrum of computing systems, from palmtop devices to high-end mainframes. Its weakness is selling them."

"That disconnect was painfully clear in IBM's (stock: IBM) first quarter financial results, released last week. Stagnant software and services revenue played a part in the poor showing, but what really hurt was the 12 percent decline in hardware sales, compared with a year ago."

"The continuing challenge for IBM is that some of its systems are still "perceived as proprietary, and that becomes a marketing issue," said Merrill Lynch analyst Steve Milunovich. That's where IBM's growing embrace of Linux might help."
