Re-Imagining Linux Platforms to Meet the Needs of Cloud Service Providers

"Enterprise users put off by a lack of centralized management for their open source resources may be interested in new software coming from Hewlett-Packard. The company at its OpenView 2000 user conference this week is expected to announce software that will let network professionals monitor and configure their Linux servers and applications. HP also plans to make changes to its online support and service capabilities so network professionals can troubleshoot their problems immediately."

"HP will soon offer a Smart Plug-In (SPI) module for OpenView Express that will use a set of agents to support application-specific configuration, and fault and performance management services. SPI modules for applications such as Exchange, Lotus Domino and Notes are now available."

"Sources indicate the Linux SPI will let net professionals establish their own thresholds for server and application performance. There will be a monitor to view and interpret events on the machine, and in case of problems, send alerts via e-mail. OpenView Express will also be able to ensure a given machine doesn't run too many processes simultaneously, and the software can shut down applications that are malfunctioning."
