Re-Imagining Linux Platforms to Meet the Needs of Cloud Service Providers

"IBM has recycled some dusty OS/2 technology for the Windows 2000 and Internet device era. Workspace On-Demand 3.0, which was launched here at PC Expo, is a server-based tool for managing both thin and "Intel-based" Windows clients and deploying applications that runs on Windows NT and 2000."

"The first iteration of the platform, which shipped in 1997, ran on OS/2 clients and servers only. The second version supported only Windows servers. The latest will support all Windows clients and thin client as well, the company said."

"Support for Linux clients and servers will be available separately through IBM's services divisions, the company said. The software complements and does not cannibalize any of the offerings in Tivoli's Enterprise Management Suite, Smith added."
