"A message from Chris Hobbs about how he's coming under pressure
from his Math department for not being able to run MS Windows
programs on the 125 Xterminals he's installed at Silver Valley High
School started a lengthy discussion on how to use Linux (and
computers in general) to best help teachers to teach mathematics.
One of the things that came out of the discussion is that the
programs alone aren't enough--lesson plans to properly integrate
the programs into classroom work are necessary if they are to be
used at all. Such lesson plans are best written by experienced
teachers, and their lack could be a serious bottleneck to the
acceptance of Linux in many schools. We reviewed downloadable
lesson plans from various sites around the internet, and while most
of them referred to Microsoft programs or other proprietary
software, very few couldn't be easily adapted to use programs
available on Linux. We hope to contact some of the authors of these
lesson plans and get their permission to adapt and republish their
lesson plans for Linux-available software."
